Can There Be Lasting World Peace?
Although there may be at present a lull in armed conflict in the Middle East,
there are still many problems to be solved both there and on other parts of the
world.
What does the future hold in store for the world? There are many suggestions
for lasting world peace and "summit" conferences are quite common place. But as
soon as one problem is solved, another rears its ugly head. Nevertheless world
leaders keep on striving for peace. They may even achieve a level of success,
for the Bible speaks of a time when nations will believe a delusion that lasting
peace has been achieved and will cry out: "Peace and safety"!
But, ultimate success lies in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ, for at such a
time of relative peace and safety, the Bible says, the Lord Jesus will return
suddenly to an unsuspecting world. The Bible cautions us not to put our trust
in man's ability to bring peace to this earth. Sadly this can never be achieved
while man is in control; "the heart is deceitful above all things and
desperately wicked", says the prophet Jeremiah.
The Bible says that, despite man's best endeavours, there will be a final war
called "Armageddon"! Invading armies from the north will be destroyed by God on
the mountains of Israel. But we need not fear the future if we put our faith
and trust in God. For He has promised a new world order of things, when all
nations will live in peace. God's prophet Isaiah speaks of that time when, by
the power of God:
"..all nations will beat their swords into ploughshares
and their spears into pruning hooks"
and he says that they shall not engage in war any more. Yes, all nations, even
Arab and Jew, will live in peace.
It will be a peace that you can share, and be a part of. But to find out how,
you must read God's word, the Bible, for only there He tells you what He
requires you to do.
